Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Elephanta Island near Mumbai. They date back to the 5th–7th century CE and are dedicated mainly to Lord Shiva. The most famous sculpture in the caves is the magnificent Trimurti, showing Shiva as the Creator, Protector, and Destroyer. The caves are carved from solid basalt rock and contain shrines, courtyards, halls, and intricate sculptures. The island was named "Elephanta" by the Portuguese after they found a large stone elephant statue there. The caves showcase Indian rock-cut architecture and reflect the rich art and culture of ancient India. Today, Elephanta Caves are a popular tourist attraction, visited by thousands every year via ferry rides from Mumbai.
