Bhaja Caves

Bhaja Caves are ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves located near Lonavala, Maharashtra, dating back to the 2nd century BCE. They are among the oldest caves in India and belong to the Hinayana phase of Buddhism. The site consists of 22 caves, with the most impressive being the large Chaitya Griha (prayer hall). The caves feature a beautifully carved stupa, wooden-style arched roof, and intricate sculptures. Carvings of warriors, animals, and mythological figures showcase early Indian art and architecture. Bhaja Caves are situated on a hill near Bhaja village, offering scenic views and a trekking experience. Today, they are an important archaeological, historical, and spiritual site, attracting both tourists and researchers.
