Melghat Tiger Reserve is located in the Amravati district, within the Satpura mountain ranges, and covers an area of about 1,677 sq. km. It was among the first nine tiger reserves established in 1973 under Project Tiger. The name Melghat means "meeting of the ghats," referring to its hilly terrain and deep valleys. The reserve is home to Royal Bengal Tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, hyenas, jackals, and over 250 bird species. Dense forests of teak, bamboo, and mixed deciduous trees dominate the landscape, supporting a rich ecosystem. The Korku tribes live in and around the reserve, practicing traditional agriculture and maintaining a unique cultural heritage. With its wildlife, natural beauty, and tribal culture, Melghat is both a conservation hotspot and an eco-tourism destination.
