Shivneri Fort
Shivneri Fort is located near Junnar in Pune district, Maharashtra. It is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire, in 1630. The fort is built on a hill about 3,000 feet above sea level with steep cliffs for defense. Shivneri has strong fortifications, seven massive gates, and water reservoirs that made it self-sufficient. Inside the fort, there are ancient rock-cut caves, temples, and the idol of goddess Shivai, after whom Shivaji was named. The fort also has structures like the mbarkhana (granary), water tanks, and a pond called Badami Talav. Today, Shivneri Fort is a popular trekking and heritage site, attracting history lovers and tourists.
