Raigad Fort
Raigad Fort is located in the Sahyadri mountain range in Maharashtra, near Mahad. It was the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Maratha Empire in the 17th century. The fort stands at a height of about 2,700 feet above sea level, with steep cliffs on all sides. Shivaji Maharaj was crowned as the Chhatrapati (Emperor) here in 1674. Important structures inside include the Raj Bhavan (royal palace), Jagdishwar temple, and marketplace. The fort also has the Samadhi (memorial) of Shivaji Maharaj. Today, Raigad Fort is a major historical monument and a popular trekking and tourist destination.
